A Film by Bappaditya Bandopadhyay

The Bengali feature film is an introspective journey into the lives of four women who are trapped in the world of human trafficking. Desperate circumstances in life lands them up with an agent who allures them with a better life in the distant cities. Betrayed in love and by the family members, they migrate under difficult circumstances and with different names and sneak into a cosmopolitan city.

Itu, one of the girls in question, is in love with her music teacher and leaves her home to settle down in some other place. But she is sold off by her beloved to an agent involved in trafficking, after going through a painful abortion process.  Fatima, an illegal immigrant, in search of her father who had deserted his family and settled somewhere in this country, is detained by the Border Security Forces for questioning on charges of terrorist links, is raped by the defenders of law. The local police, instead of registering a case of rape against the forces, sales her to the traffickers.  Soma, whose elder sister is a prostitute in the city, decided to take the same path as poverty does not leave her with any better choice. The fourth girl is a young widow who is also trapped by the traffickers.

Real drama unfolds when the four girls lands up in the city.  They get completely lost in the glitter and glamour of the city life and ends up being call girls, in order to survive. Slowly, their dreams change, they now dream of making bigger money in a more developed city.

Things become more intriguing when a European girl, who has suffered the same fate at the hand of the traffickers, starts sharing their apartment….

What happens to these women eventually will drive the narrative of the film

In today’s India huge numbers of girls are falling prey to human trafficking and recent studies show that Eastern India has become the hub of such activities.

Director’s note

In a way, this film is a sequel to my earlier film Kantatar (Barbed Wire). The partition, at one point of time, caused human displacement in a large scale in our country. The present trend of globalization has once again unleashed a massive displacement of human beings. The backdrop is also even more complex. It was therefore impossible to maintain a linear narration. Kaal is a multilayered film dealing with human displacement.
